Does Fret Size Matter? A Quick Guide for Guitar Players
Does Fret Size Really Matter on a Guitar?
If you're buying a guitar - or just getting curious about your current one you might notice terms like jumbo frets, medium jumbo, vintage frets, or narrow-tall in the specs.
But what do those actually mean? And more importantly… does fret size matter?
The short answer: Yes - but mostly for feel.
🪛 What Is Fret Size?
Fret size refers to the height and width of the metal frets embedded in your guitar’s fingerboard. Different sizes can change the way your guitar feels when you play.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:
🎸 Common Guitar Fret Sizes
Vintage Frets – Narrow and low
Smooth for chord playing, but less room for bending
Found on many classic-style or reissue guitars
Medium Jumbo – Balanced and modern
Most Fender-style guitars use this size
Great for a mix of rhythm and lead playing
A solid, middle-ground feel for most players
Jumbo Frets – Tall and wide
Easier string bending with a lighter touch
Great for expressive lead work
Preferred by rock, blues, and shred-style players
Narrow-Tall Frets – Slim but tall
Increasingly popular on modern Fender models
Offers the easy bending of jumbo frets without the wide footprint
Great for precise note control and smooth vibrato
Can feel faster and cleaner for players with a light touch
🎯 Why It Matters
Fret size doesn’t change your tone - but it does affect:
How hard you have to press to fret a note
How easily you can bend strings
Whether chords feel soft and smooth, or crisp and elevated
Some players don’t notice much of a difference… others are very particular. It all depends on your hands and your playing style.
So… Which Fret Size Is Right for You?
It’s personal. Try a few if you can.
Rhythm and chords? Medium jumbo or vintage might feel best.
Lead and bends? Jumbo or narrow-tall frets are worth trying.
Still learning? You’ll figure out what you like over time - just be aware it’s part of the feel.
